FAQ – can I drink shakes with whey protein isolate if I’m lactose intolerant?

We get it. You see a product advertised as both ‘whey-based’ and ‘low lactose’ and you’re immediately confused. Can whey products really be gut-safe? And how can a dairy-based product be low lactose?

There are a number of different types of whey protein powders - concentrate, isolate, hydrolysate and native. We specifically chose to use whey protein isolate in Superflora shakes because it contains little or no lactose which makes it a good source of protein for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and/or sensitive tummies. Plus, whey protein isolate is suitable for those following the low fodmap diet.

According to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, Superflora shakes are not considered lactose free because they do contain traces of lactose but the levels are negligible (between 1-3%), and generally well tolerated by those that are lactose intolerant. However, in all the time that we’ve been researching gut health, we’ve never met two guts that are the same so we can’t guarantee that our shakes will suit you.

Whey protein isolate is therefore suitable (in most cases) for those that have issues digesting lactose, but they are certainly not suitable for those who have a milk allergy.

We love supporting Australian farmers and our whey is sourced from 100% pasture-raised and cold pressed whey protein isolate that is 99% sugar and fat free.  It contains no added sugars and is naturally rich in branch chain amino acids.

So yes, you can drink shakes with whey protein isolate if you are lactose intolerant. Why not try our Superflora shakes today
