Shakes for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other gut conditions
FAQs
Are Superflora shakes suitable for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?
Ugh! Sorry to hear you have IBS too. It can be a real pain. We’ve carefully selected ingredients that the science tells us improve IBS and avoided ingredients that can trigger symptoms.
All our shake are low fodmap (p.s. if you’re new to fodmaps, you should watch our explanatory video). We’ve added a clinically validated probiotic (find out more about the benefits of LactoSpore® Bacillus coagulans, MTCC 5856 for IBS and general health) and a custom fibre-blend (psyllium husks, partially hydrolysed guar gum, chia seeds and linseeds).
We’ve tested and tested and tested our shakes, not just on ourselves but with folks across all different IBS sub-types. And we now have thousands of happy customers. You can read the reviews at the bottom of each product page.
But how can we be 100% sure that it will be right for you? We can’t, every case of IBS is a little bit different. You won’t know until you try it. Just remember – any sudden dietary change may trigger gut symptoms in people with highly sensitive tummies.
So for the best outcome, we recommend that you start low and go slow. Start with a a 1/2 serve and build up to 50g. And drink plenty of water. You should always up your water when you up your fibre.
And be consistent, the benefits of the fibre and probiotics build over time.
How should I prepare my shake? (milk or water) how much do I add?
For best results, blend 50g (1/3 of a cup) of Superflora with 250ml (1 cup) of chilled low fodmap milk (we like lactose-free, almond and soy milk) or water and drink immediately. You can add a low fodmap serving of fruit (1/3 ripe banana, 1/3 cup raspberries or 5 strawberries) for a delicious smoothie.
Are Superflora shakes gluten free?
Yes. Our shakes have been tested by a WA-based NATA accredited lab so you can be confident that they are gluten-free. Australia has the strictest food standards relating to allergen testing. Gluten free means that our product has no detectable gluten.
No, not everyone with IBS also has Coeliac Disease, gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. But there can be considerable overlap between the symptoms. Plus, Coeliac Disease is 4 times more common in people with IBS. Coeliac Disease affects 1 in 70 Aussies, with close to 80% remaining undiagnosed. So if you do have diagnosed Coeliac Disease or even if you think you might, we’ve got you covered. We’ve removed all of the gluten, just in case.
Are Superflora shakes low fodmap?
Yes, all four flavours have been tested and certified low FODMAP by Monash University.
That means that one serve of each product is low in FODMAPs and can assist with following the Monash University Low FODMAP Diet. A strict low FODMAP diet should only be commenced under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Monash University has assessed the product as being low in FODMAPs only.
Are they lactose free?
Our Plant-Based Chocolate and Plant-based Vanilla options are lactose free.
Our other shakes contain whey protein isolate and are therefore not considered dairy or lactose free according to the Food Standard Australia and New Zealand guidelines. However, whey protein powder isolate contains only a tiny amount of lactose. We’ve purposefully selected an Australian whey protein isolate product that is 99% sugar and fat free. It has no added sugars, is low in lactose and naturally rich in branched chain amino acids. It’s minus the bloat, but sadly not minus all the lactose.
Are Superflora shakes suitable for Crohn’s and Colitis?
Our shakes are a great choice for when you are in remission. A low FODMAP diet can improve the IBS symptoms commonly experienced by people with Crohn’s or colitis.. Our shakes are a convenient low FODMAP meal or snack that you can just grab as you head out the door.
However, the fibre in our shakes means that they aren’t suitable if you have a flare/active inflammation and have been recommended to stick to a low residue or low-fibre diet.
For more information about diet and Crohns and colitis, check out this GESA infromation sheet.
Are Superflora shakes suitable for people with diverticular disease?
Again, our shakes are not suitable if you have an acute episode of diverticulitis and have been advised to follow a low fibre diet.
However, once you’ve recovered, many doctors recommend upping your fibre intake to prevent furture diverticulitis and Superflora shakes are a delicious way to do that.
Please talk to your doctor or dietitian about your specific needs and when to return a high fibre diet. We have more information about diverticular disease on our gut conditions page.
What type of fibre do you use?
Did you know that most Aussies do not consumer enough fibre? The World Health Organisation recommends 25-30 grams per day for adults. Superflora shakes contain around 7 grams of fibre per serve. But it’s not just about the quantity of fibre; it’s about the types of fibre that we’ve selected that matters.
We get that fibre can strike fear into the hearts (and guts) of people with IBS and sensitive tummies. That’s why we have extensively researched fibre fermentability, solubility and viscosity to ensure we’ve got the right mix of fibres.
The fibre mix is designed to be suitable for people with both the constipation and diarrhoea predominant types of IBS. It helps food move through the gut at just the right pace.
It’s normal for there to be an adjustment period when you start increasing the amount of fibre in your diet. Make sure to drink plenty of water. And always talk with your GP about any changes in your bowel movements that are causing you concern.
What about after bowel surgery?
Again, follow your doctor’s advice and wait until your gut is fully healed before adding fibre rich foods like our shakes to your diet.
Are the shakes suitable for vegans?
Our Plant-Based Chocolate and Plant-based Vanilla Superflora are suitable for vegans.
They are gut-friendly, low FODMAP and taste good.
Do they contain artificial sweeteners?
No, no, no! Many artificial sweeteners, especially those containing polyols, sorbitol and mannitol can trigger IBS symptoms causing cramping, bloating, flatulence and diarrhea. So we’ve avoided all the nasties. Our shakes are sweetened naturally by maple syrup sugar.
How are the shakes different from the Daily Gut Health Boost?
Both the Daily Gut Health Boost and our Superflora Gut Health Shakes provide fibre and probiotics.
The shakes have a mixture of gentle fibre types, whilst the Daily Gut Health Boost mixes contain just PHGG, which dissolves easily in water.
The Greens+, Berries+ & Tropical+ mixes contain delicious low-FODMAP amounts of fruit and greens and the same great probiotic as the shakes. Simply stir in 125ml of water, drink and enjoy!
The shakes are more substantial and great as the base of a low-FODMAP meal - blitz with milk and even a little low FODMAP fruit for a fabulous, filling smoothie for breakfast or lunch.
Can I add it to the shakes?
No, we don’t recommend adding the Daily Gut Health Boost to our Gut Health Shakes. It will make the shakes too thick.
You could have the Daily Gut Health Boost before breakfast and then a shake at lunch time. But if you’re taking both, make sure you build up gradually if you’re not used to this amount of fibre.
